A closed garage door or locked window can spell the difference between safe homes and burgled residences.
With that in mind, area law enforcement officials hope that the 27th annual National Night Out makes residents wiser and neighborhoods safer. Neighborhoods statewide are expected to participate in the Tuesday, Oct. 5, observance, in which residents and police work together in making neighborhoods safer.

"There are many things residents can do to make them safer," said Trophy Club Police Officer Scott Voigt.
From closing and locking doors to hiding valuables inside vehicles, the smallest measures can sometimes save thousands of dollars, police said. According to the National Organization of Town Watch, more than 36 million people participated in last year's block parties, cookouts and other community events.

"They have such a strong group of people banding together and that's really helped out," said Miller.

By setting up a booth at the event, Miller said he will provide information on vacation and neighborhood crime watches.

That goes for Trophy Club, as well, where priorities echo a familiar real-estate mantra: local, local, local.
"We're sticking to the roots of National Night Out," said Voigt, explaining that some cities have organized bigger parties rather than the smaller, neighborhood-focused gatherings that marked the early years of the annual event.

So like many departments nearby, Trophy Club plans to accept invitations to multiple neighborhood parties. With The Highlands at Trophy Club adding many new residents to the community, Voigt said the need for community education is particularly high this year.

"We have entire neighborhoods of all new people, and education is so important, Voigt said.
