A day to race and drive for the cure


Most people wouldn’t just hand their car keys over to a stranger.
Lee Ann Burnett isn’t most people. And her 2008 Premium Coup Ford Mustang is no ordinary car either.
Both Burnett and her car do their part in helping to raise awareness about a rare and deadly illness that goes undetected in women so often. Still, Burnett is quick to give all the attention to the shiny black Mustang with pink trim.
“It’s not about me, it’s all about the car,” Burnett said during the 2010 Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure Saturday morning in downtown Wichita Falls.
This was Burnett’s third year at the race for breast cancer awareness. It also was a three-peat for the specially designed car, dedicated to the memory of Burnett’s older sister, Loretta Hickey Schumacher.

Loretta died in December 2005 after a long battle with inflammatory breast cancer.
“It’s still so hard to talk about her, because there is just so much to say,” Burnett said. “She was 12 years older than me, so she was always my biggest hero.

“She was just so inspirational, and I’ll never forgot what she told me as she was fighting the cancer. She said I’m going to beat this because even if I die, it can’t come with me.”
Burnett said her sister’s cancer was not detectable by mammograms because it doesn’t present lumps in many women. Burnett has eagerly kept her promise to her sister to spread that message. She said she’s taken the car to other cancer races, car shows and anywhere else she has a chance to get the word out.

“Every time I meet a survivor and I see them admiring it, I just hand over the keys and ask them if they’d like to drive,” she said. “I tell them it’s more their car than it is mine.”
The Mustang had a chance to turn plenty of heads Saturday, serving as the pace car for both the fun run and walk race.

Event organizers said this year was a record turnout with more than 3,000 participants coming out to show their support.
Men and women of all ages, some with dogs dressed in pink T-shirts, packed Lamar Street beginning at the starting line at the Wichita Falls courthouse.

Midwestern State Cross-Country coach Koby Styles was the first to cross the finish after the race. He said he was running in support of one of his aunts.
“It’s always fun to come out here and do something for a great cause,” he said. “We’ve got some members of our cross-country team running today as well, and it’s just so great to see so many people participate.”
