As a young man, he served in the U.S. Navy during World War II and was a participant in the 1944 D-Day invasion of Normandy. He later served in the Pacific. He was within a mile of ground zero in Hiroshima after the atomic bomb fell.

The Mortimers moved to Durango from the Texas panhandle in 1957, and Mr. Mortimer applied his experience in drilling oil wells in Texas to a new career in the water well business. In 1969, he went out on his own and established a water well business in La Plata County. He drilled water wells for almost 40 years in the county, and he estimated that he had drilled about 2,000 holes throughout his career.

After closing Harry’s Drilling in 1993 and selling off some of his equipment, he decided he wasn’t ready to retire. He returned to the business and started another company, Harry Mortimer Water Well Drilling. He finally retired for good in 2003 because of declining health from an accident. Harry traveled a bit and tried a few hobbies, but his family said that his work was his true passion.

Mr. Mortimer is survived by his wife of 62 years, Ruth Mortimer of Durango; sons Neal Mortimer of Durango and Geary Mortimer of Canyon, Texas; brother Reese Mortimer of Odessa, Texas; two grandsons; and two great-grandchildren.

A funeral will take place at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 2, 2010, at Church of Christ in Bayfield with Ray Wallace officiating. Burial will follow at Greenmount Cemetery in Durango.
