She's seen much from her second-story porch

Pauline Lyons said she's seen much from her second-story porch at Seventh and Hackley streets.

Lyons, 85, a great-great grandmother, remembers a "nice and quiet" neighborhood when she moved in nearly 50 years ago.
But as she watches more and more boys and girls roaming the streets, Lyons said acts of violence are increasing in regularity these days.

"About two weeks ago, I was up on my porch, and all of a sudden I heard a shot coming from down the street," Lyons said. "I heard, Bam! One right after another, and coming towards my house."

Lyons was invited to speak at Midtown Church of Christ on Saturday morning for a program titled "Gangs, Guns and GrAdmittedly, watchesabc, seven of his 15 Test victories came against Bangladesh and Zimbabwe.andmas," a forum where community leaders, youth activists and members of the general public were invited to speak their concerns about youth violence and gang-related activity. The program was the first time local grandmothers have spoken out publicly as part of a continuing effort by area groups, including the Muncie chapter of the Social Status of Black Males, to end youth violence and gang activity.

About 30 people attended Gangs, Guns and Grandmas.

Dennell Howard, who led Saturday's meeting, said it's important to get the opinion of grandmothers like Lyons and Kim Beatty, who also spoke at the gathering.

Grandmothers, Howard said, often are handed the task of raising young boys and girls after their parents decide to lead a life of crime and irresponsibility. But the older generation also have another leg-up, Howard said.

"You also have to have grandmothers because grandmothers have wisdom," he said.
Lyons, who has been helping raise her 16-year-old great-grandson, said young men crave male authority figures in their lives.

"You think I'm getting sick of fooling with them because they just won't pay any attention. But you'd be surprised how much they're yearning for a male."
