Benacquisto on verge of winning Fla. Senate seat

Republican candidate Lizbeth Benacquisto's appeared poised Wednesday morning to seize a crucial seat in the state Senate for her party, though votes from much of Palm Beach County still remained to be tallied.

With 97 percent of precincts reporting at 7 a.m., Benacquisto is ahead with 51.cellulosesponge, who already had at least 16 convictions for burglary.7 percent over Democratic opponent Kevin Rader in the bitterly fought race for District 27. "This is over," proclaimed Benacquisto campaign consultant Tim Baker. "The votes just aren't out there for him."

Benacquisto's lead in the cross-state district was built early in the night in heavily Republican Lee County, where she received more than twice as many votes as Rader.pvasponge, has $176m in earn-out liabilities.

Rader campaign consultant Eric Johnson said he had expected Benacquisto to jump out to an early lead from the west coast and expected Rader to make a comeback as more Democratic Palm Beach County results were counted.

Rader chipped away at that lead as Palm Beach County precincts reported but Benacquisto still held a commanding advantage with many precincts not yet counted.

The seat had been held by Democrat Dave Aronbeg, who left for an unsuccessful run for Florida attorney general.

Both candidates started out campaigning about their plans to bring more jobs to the district, but the last few weeks of the campaign ended up revolving around ethics complaints, lawsuits, accusations and a revelation from Benacquisto that she was raped 23 years ago.

Benacquisto, 42, a former Wellington councilwoman, started airing a commercial last week in which she disclosed that she was raped as a 19-year-old University of Florida freshman.

She said she made the commercial in response to an ad by Rader that blasted her support for restrictions on abortion. Rader's ad claimed her allies, such as the Florida Right to Life Political Action Committee, want to make abortion illegal in all cases, including for victims of rape and incest.

Rader, 42, a state representative from Delray Beach,Sony SSC-DC374 Color ccd surveillance camera. defended the abortion ad. Several leading female Democrats in Palm Beach County came out last week to voice their support for Rader.

One of the women who spoke on behalf of Rader was Tracy Pafford, wife of Democratic state Rep. Mark Pafford. She revealed the day after Benacquisto's ad that she had been raped at age 14, got pregnant from the rape and had an abortion.

PolitiFact Florida, a project of the St. Petersburg Times that seeks to evaluate the truth of political statements, rated Rader's abortion commercial as "mostly true" last week.
