Hazelwood Central's fails to three-peat
The two-time defending Class 6 champion Hawks had their 19-game win streak snapped by Rockhurst with a 10-7 loss in a defensive battle on Saturday night at the Edward Jones Dome.
“We came up short,” Hazelwood Central coach Rich Nixon said. ”Period. End of story.”
Rockhurst (14-0) was the No. 1 team in the final regular season Class 6 state rankings, with Hazelwood Central (13-1) at No. 2.
“The game turned out exactly the way we thought,” Rockhurst coach Tony Severino said. “We thought if we could make it ugly and keep the game close and keep the game under 17 points, we’d have a chance to win. That’s the way we’ve been playing all year.”
Hazelwood Central, which had eight games this season decided by a touchdown or less, was attempting to become the eighth team to win three consecutive Missouri state football championships and the first team since Jefferson City in 1978 to win three straight titles in Missouri’s largest classification.
The Hawks have five state championships and a state-record 10 runner-up finishes and have lost just four times in their last 44 games.
Rockhurst has won nine state championships, including four in the past 11 seasons (2000, 2003, 2007 and 2010).
“They are very well-coached,” Nixon said. “They are very disciplined. They’ve got a really good defense.
