A coaching legacy


While Harbert has not coached high school sports in more than two decades, he has left his mark on the local coaching scene. Harbert's grandson, Scott Hare, is head football coach at Spanish Springs High School in Sparks, Nev., and was the head coach at Stevenson for two seasons.

Stevenson athletic director Jeff Young was as an assistant football coach under Harbert for eight years before taking over head-coaching duties when Harbert stepped down.

"He epitomized everything I hoped to be someday," Young said. "His whole approach to coaching and life was just something I really watched carefully and admired tremendously. That for me was a gift."

His football teams at Stevenson made to the section playoffs, but never won a league title.
