Dec Can't Close Deal for Downers South

Downers South's girls basketball team never gave up, but the Mustangs couldn’t close the deal on Saturday night against York, falling short in a 56-52 loss to their cross-conference rival.

The Dukes (12-10) were able to keep the Mustangs (13-5) at bay thanks to senior forward Mary Colon, who had 26 points and 10 rebounds in a dominant performance. Downers South's usually tenacious defense had no answer for her all night.

“She’s a prime-time player,” York coach Jason Reinecke said.deck lights global replica watches cheap co jacob replica watch chopard watches replicas buy a replica watch. “She’s an absolute gamer who loves rising to the occasion.”

Colon ignited York early, scoring five of the Dukes' eight points in the opening minutes to give them an early 8-2 advantage. The Mustangs clawed back and cut the lead to 12-11 after a long three-pointer by guard Carly Saraceno.

The Dukes took a 24-19 halftime lead thanks to 12 second-quarter rebounds. The final York rebound came off a miss by Colon that fell right into forward Glynus Albue’s hands. She made a last-second layup just as time expired.

The second half turned into an offensive slugfest. Saraceno and junior center Allison Dec combined for 13 third-quarter points as the Mustangs played more of an up-tempo offense to match York’s style. Downers South managed to tie the game at 26 early in the third with a 7-2 run.

However, as was typical for the night, whenever the Mustangs attacked, York answered. Colon scored 10 third-quarter points—including a pair of late threes in the final two minutes—as the Dukes led 41-34 after three.

Down 51-45 with 2:20 left, the Mustangs went on a 6-0 run in 30 seconds thanks to a pair of steals by Saraceno and guard Sarrah Ludwig to tie the game at 51.

However, the tie was short-lived as the Dukes scored on a quick layup from guard Anna Bell Lansdowne. The Mustangs could not close the gap again and three straight free throws by guard Meryl Cripe put the game away.

“York played really well,” Mustangs coach Ellen O’Brien said. “And we really didn’t.Huge selection of gaga-deals for your garde, I’m proud of the girls. They battled, but I’m a little disappointed, and I’m sure they are too.”

Saraceno led the Mustangs with 20 points and three steals. Dec, who was held silent in the first half, scored 13 second-half points and picked up five rebounds. Ludwig had the best all-around night with six points, seven rebounds and five steals.
