Massillon resident Ed Grier said he spoke on behalf of many southeast-side residents when he expressed concerns about cutting the elementary swim program entirely.

Grier expressed concern about the accessibility of swimming lessons if or when the elementary swim program ends.
“Some of these kids will be dropped by the wayside and they will not be able to take advantage of it for one reason or another,” Grier said. “The safety and health benefits of this are priceless. If you can learn water safety and exercise and everything that (swimming) gives you, that’s great.”

“It is our hope and desire to look strongly and diligently at implementing an after-school (swim) program next year,” Carmichael said.
Board member Gary Miller told those in attendance that the board will remain open to listening to the concerns of the community and emphasized that the district is taking a very holistic approach to saving money and cutting costs.
“This has never been brought up to the board,” Miller said of the plan to close the pool. “I have received a lot of e-mail with regard to closing the pool and I understand the value of the swim program. … This year, we don’t want to take a hacksaw or butcher knife and try to whack at a program or school or anything in itself. We are committed to taking it strategically.”
