Lieutentant Governor Simon takes office
Just 90 minutes before, Sheila Simon had taken the oath of office as Illinois' 46th lieutenant governor. It had been a sudden and unlikely rise for the Southern Illinois University law professor, who had not been a part of the Democratic primary for the position, and instead was hand-chosen by Gov. Pat Quinn.
Now thrust into the public arena as one of Illinois' most prominent politicians, Simon's life had already changed. Missing from the scene was their youngest daughter, Brennan, who is in Italy as an exchange student. However, Brennan was still able to talk with her mom on inauguration morning via Skype, the online phone call and video chat program.
Family was a recurring theme in Simon's inauguration speech, just as it clearly is in her life. After the speech, Simon said the only person she could see in the audience was her "personal photgrapher" - her brother, Martin, who came into Springfield to witness his sister's moment.
Once the swearing-in ceremony was over, and the family was back in their apartment, the main topic of conversation wasn't the inauguration, or the upcoming visits to the governor's mansion and the Capitol. Instead, it centered around Reilly, and how she would get to a hair salon in preparation for that night's inaugural ball.
