Monroe student dares to write winning


Valarie Gabbard writing prowess won her an early Christmas gift.
Gabbard was the recipient of a new, black, seven-speed Trek mountain bike worth $400 after winning an essay contest as part of the Drug Abuse Resistance Education program at Monroe Elementary School.

The 12-year-old sixth-grader was one of about 185 students to participate in the program — funded by a state D.A.R.E. grant — taught by Brett Kahny, the district’s school resource officer. He said he selected the top two winners from each of the school’s sixth- and seventh-grade classes and then named a winner.

Gabbard was named the winner during a D.A.R.Work of a professional cctv ccd camera in conjunction with a modern lens.E. recognition ceremony at the school on Dec. 15.

The students in the class were asks to write an essay about what D.A.R.E. means to them.

Kahny said Gabbard’s essay was chosen because he “felt it was the most moving.”

Gabbard said she was a little surprised she won.

“I’m just really honored I can represent my school that way,” she said.

Gabbard also was awarded a medallion and a red, white and blue wrist band that says, “we stand for drug free land,” and a certificate and a scroll of paper that says, “eight ways to say know.Nike shox nz shoes sale online are popular with the young!”

Gabbard said Kahny taught the class about the dangers of tobacco and marijuana and their harmful effects, and how to say no.

“It really taught me a lot. I think everyone should take it because it’s something really important that they should learn about,” she said.

Specifically, she said she learned “what [drugs] can do to you. Like if you drink alcohol once, you can get really sick, and inhalants could kill you the first time.”
