MACKAY Base Hospital doctors are urging parents to take extra care to ensure children don’t accidentally swallow foreign objects over the Christmas break.

Since July last year, 31 children were taken to the Mackay Base Hospital with 24 of them being under the age of 5.

The majority of these cases happened over the summer months of November, December and January.

Mackay Base Hospital emergency doctor and injury prevention researcher Dale Hanson said batteries were particularly dangerous.

“The batteries can actually generate an external current which will erode the tissue internally,” Dr Hanson said.

“Severe erosion can occur within four hours of swallowing a battery.”

Dr Hanson said extra vigilance was required at this time of year when new gifts enter the family home.
